Tech project inspires students

School students at Ideagen

Students at Sutherland House School got the chance to learn about a career in technology when they took part in an innovative project with software company Ideagen.

Seven youngsters from the city centre school gained valuable work experience while tasked with designing a Wellbeing App for staff at the company’s head office. The students, aged between 15 and 18, worked with consultants, discussed ideas, and learned how to create an app.

This month the students returned to the company to see the unveiling of the prototype of the app. They joined the team at Ideagen to see the results of all their work. They also met with Apollo, the office robot dog, and received certificates for their work.

The project initially came about thanks to Speakers for Schools, who invited Sutherland House School to take part in their ‘Access all Areas’ campaign. It’s a project that aims to raise awareness around inclusivity in the workplace and inspire more young people to consider their options.

Our students have learned so much during the project. It has been a fantastic partnership and such a positive experience for them that we are looking to continue with a similar project next year.

At the launch, our students were lit up by the talk by Mike Smith, who is in the research and development team at Ideagen. They learnt it’s possible to love your job and to stay in love with your work you need to keep challenging yourself. They also learnt that learning is a skill for life; vital messages for our young people.
